AFN – Yukon Regional Chief Election Process

 2021 Call for Nominations – NOW CLOSED

On October 29, 2021, Kluane Adamek was acclaimed as AFN Yukon Regional Chief for a second term. Bruce Warnsby, Electoral Officer for the Assembly of First Nations – Yukon Region, issued a Close of Nominations following the deadline for the Regional Chief election call for nominations: Final Close of Nomination – October 28, 2021

 

 

During the election process, the Electoral Officer is responsible to call for nominations 35 calendar days prior to the date of the election. Once the election process is underway Yukon First Nation individuals who are qualified and nominated and confirm their interest to be a candidate are required to file their nomination forms with the Electoral Officer no later than 21 calendar days prior to the date of the election.

Candidates must be:

  • At Least 19 Years of Age
  • A citizen, member or beneficiary of a Yukon First Nation; and
  • Nominated by 3 Yukon First Nation Chiefs.

All Nominations must be submitted in the required forms to the Electoral Officer by no later than 4:00 PM on 27 October 2021.

Oversight and administration of the Election Process

 

The Electoral Officer, responsible for the nomination and election process, is appointed by Yukon First Nation Chiefs. The Electoral Officer’s primary responsibilities are set out in section 2 of the Election Rules.

 

The Election Oversight Committee, responsible to work with the Electoral officer and ensure that the election rules are upheld, is established by Yukon First Nation Chiefs, in accordance with section 3 of the Election Rules. The Election Oversight Committee consists of three elected Yukon First Nation leaders. Section 5 of the election rules provides that an AFN Yukon staff member is to be available to provide administrative support to the election process.
