Statement from Regional Chief Kluane Adamek and Grand Chief Peter Johnston on the AFNYR and CYFN Amalgamation

Statement from Regional Chief Kluane Adamek and Grand Chief Peter Johnston on the AFNYR and CYFN Amalgamation

During the Assembly of First Nations (AFN) Yukon Chiefs Summit on May 21-22, 2025, and the Council of Yukon First Nations (CYFN) Leadership meeting held on May 30, 2025, Yukon First Nation Chiefs provided direction through resolutions (Summit Resolution 05-2025 and CYFN LDR #1221-25) to integrate the roles of AFN Yukon Regional Office and CYFN. This direction supports the unification of the Grand Chief and the AFN Yukon Regional Chief positions and responsibilities – under a single leadership model – effective October 1, 2025. The new model is intended to streamline governance, reduce duplication, and strengthen national and political advocacy grounded in the shared priorities of all 14 Yukon First Nations.

“We are truly a Yukon that leads. This is about amplifying the collective voices of all Yukon First Nations in a way that reflects who we are: united, visionary, and rooted in our values. This new model creates the space for stronger, more coordinated advocacy and ensures that Yukon First Nations are not only heard, but are leading the conversation both regionally and nationally. We are stronger together.”

– AFN Regional Chief Kluane Adamek

“This decision marks a significant step forward in unifying our efforts and advancing the interests of all Yukon First Nations. Together, we’re building a path forward, guided by our shared values and driven by our vision for the future.”

– CYFN Grand Chief Peter Johnston
